Dan Carrier’s movies news: The Dirty War on the NHS

28 November, 2019 — By Dan Carrier

Journalist John Pilger

IT’S like trusting a hungry python with a hamster, as former Conservative prime minster John Major said of letting the current Tory cartel have another five years overseeing our NHS.

And the threat our most cherished of institutions faces is laid bare in a timely and thoroughly researched documentary by journalist John Pilger.

In The Dirty War on the NHS, Pilger considers the history of the NHS, the world’s first universal healthcare service that is free at the point of use.

He illustrates what lies in store for this globally-revered institution if the free market, Tory Party right-wingers get their way.

It’s a future of healthcare designed to provide their friends with profits, not provide help to those who are unwell.

The system designed to give us all “Freedom from Fear” is being attacked from all sides.

Cuts in investment, stripping out training bursaries for nurses, making junior doctors work long, unsafe hours, not recruiting new staff, closing down A&Es, slashing GP services, increased waiting times – all as a result of applying the free market dogma where it does not belong.

With the UK seeking trade deals with the USA, there is now the added threat of American healthcare firms greedily eyeing up our NHS.

Filmed in the UK and the United States, Pilger shows why we must fight, fight, fight to save our NHS – and see off the racketeers who don’t care what happens to our healthcare as long as their bank balances get even fatter.

UK GE2019 dominates Disability News Service uploads for Thursday 21 Nov 2019

The UK General Election set for Thursday 12 December dominates this week's headlines from Disability News Service, that is updated every Thursday.

I present the headline links below without analysing the items themselves, due to time constraints and disability factors on my part. Disability News Service is run by responsible journalist John Pring, and the presentation below helps flag up items of likely interest to my most regular readers.

My main task here is to flag up the 'keywords' related to his output. It also helps counteract my feelings of powerlessness related to what is presented more generally in news media as a 'two horse race' and features demonisation of main opposition rather than focusing on policies.

Do not forget though, that this December 2019 UK General Election falls within Disability History Month!

Another Tory beneficiary of huge EU funds who is pro-Brexit?

In logging off from my email, I just saw this item:

Brexit enforcer Cummings’ farm took €235,000 in EU handouts

Jamie Doward and Josh Sandiford,The Guardian
That reminds me of

Guy Standing on IDS’ Personal Welfare Dependency

Perhaps matters of European Union and Brexit also enrich these Brexit advocates in that the prospect of a 'no deal Brexit' is a prime example of 'disaster capitalism' in the making, as outlined in 2007 by Naomi Klein?

Media obsessions with 'no deal Brexit' also deflect attention from the nastiness of what Tories are doing despite the human rights that the EU has helped bring into UK law.
